Is Your MEPCO Bill Actually Wrong? Check This First
Open your current bill. Compare these five things against your last 3 months:
Units consumed, current and previous meter readings, FPA amount, tariff category, total charges with GST.
A sudden spike in units is the clearest sign of a meter reading error. But before you file anything, confirm it is actually a mistake.
Normal Bill Spike vs Genuine Billing Mistake
In summer, ACs and coolers push you into higher slabs. Your bill can double that is the slab system working exactly as designed, not an error.
A real mistake looks different. Same season, same usage pattern, but the units show triple. Or your tariff category quietly changed from residential to commercial. That is when you act.
Detection Bill vs Regular Billing Error
These two are completely different. A detection bill is a penalty MEPCO issues when theft or meter tampering is suspected. It is not based on your current meter reading. Suppose you received one and have no idea why, go to your SDO office immediately. Ask for written proof before doing anything else. Do not confuse it with a regular billing error the process to fight it is different.
Why Do MEPCO Bill Mistakes Happen?
Five real reasons your WAPDA bill goes wrong:
Human Error in Meter Reading
Meter readers sometimes record wrong readings due to human error, or when the meter screen is unclear, they take a manual reading and make mistakes resulting in incorrect units and an overcharged bill. One wrong digit changes your slab entirely.
Faulty or Fast-Moving Meter
Your electricity meter may become faulty due to rainwater or a short circuit. Old meters sometimes run faster than actual consumption. Every month, they register more units than you use.
Wrong Tariff Category Applied
Residential, commercial, and industrial connections carry different rates. If your residential connection gets coded as commercial in the system, every unit you use gets charged at a higher rate automatically.
Incorrect Sanctioned Load
A higher sanctioned load in the system means higher fixed charges on every single bill. Even low usage months stay inflated because of this.
Delayed Payment or System Update
Payments you already made sometimes don’t update in time. This shows as arrears in your next bill making it look like you owe money you already cleared.
What Documents Do You Need Before Filing a Complaint?
Keep these ready before you start. Missing documents slow everything down.
Copy of your latest electricity bill, CNIC copy, proof of ownership or rental agreement, photo of your current meter reading, copies of the last 3 paid bills.
For name correction: add your property sale deed. For load correction: add your electrical wiring test report. Having all of this ready cuts resolution time significantly.
